Mr. Pope has over 30 years of nuclear engineering experience, including 12 years at an operating nuclear facility and six years consulting for the nuclear power industry. Mr. Pope worked in the Nuclear Fuel Section at CP&L (Progress Energy) where he was primarily responsible for thermal-hydraulic and safety analysis. This work involved development of plant NSSS models using RELAP5, reactor core sub-channel analysis using the VIPRE code, and evaluation of post-accident containment responses with the CONTEMPT, COMPARE, and GOTHIC™ codes. After transferring to Progress Energy's Harris Nuclear plant, Mr. Pope performed various functions at the site which included technical and supervisory positions in System Engineering, Engineering Programs, Nuclear Assessment, Operations, and On-line Scheduling. More recently, as a consultant, he has managed a number of engineering projects and has authored and reviewed numerous engineering calculations in support of plant design basis activities, Appendix R program improvements, Alternative Source Term implementation, and NRC inspection finding mitigation among others. Mr. Pope has extensive experience with the GOTHIC™ computer code modeling containment phenomena, room heat-up events, high energy line breaks, and non-condensable gas transport through safety related systems. He also has significant experience in analytical techniques used to determine control room and offsite radiological consequences following design basis accidents. Mr. Pope is a licensed Professional Engineer in the State of North Carolina and holds a Senior Reactor Operator (SRO) certificate for Harris Nuclear plant.
